Effect of Calcium on the Fruit Quality in the Deciduous Fruit Trees

Abstract

|
Physiological disorders in fruits deteriorate fruit quality. Since many of these disorders are related to low calcium is the fruit, they could be controlled to a large extent by increasing the level of calcium in the fruit. Low calcium in the fruit is not necessarily due to insufficient calcium uptake. Rather, it is caused by abnormal distribution of the element among various organs of the tree. Calcium also affects fruit storage life through its direct or indirect involvement in ripening process, respiration, fruit firmness and fruit rot.
This paper reviews the cellular function of calcium and various factors affecting its uptake, translocation and distribution in deciduous fruit trees. Special emphasis is given to distribution of calcium into the fruit. Some practical methods to increase calcium level in the fruit and to predict the possible occurrence of disorders during storage are also discussed.
